WELCOME!

This blog has been designed for both students and their families to provide resources and information regarding nutrition, exercise, and healthy living. It is also a forum for families to exchange recipes, announce local events, and share ideas. Part of this website corresponds to a series of homework assignments many of your students will be completing throughout the school year and can be accessed here. There are also resources for finding healthy recipes and sharing recipes and community events.

Want to know more about this project? Please read the Parent Letter (tab above).

Below is a short guide to using the blog:

The Homework Tabs-  Each tab will link you to the numbered homework assignment. You can also download all the homework assignments the Homework Download link on the right.

Healthy Recipes Tab-  When you click on this tab you will be directed to a number of healthy recipes broken into categories such as breakfast, lunch, side dishes, veggies, salads, main dishes and snacks.  There is also a link to the USDA recipe guide that allows you to find recipes based on a specific ingredient your family likes, the cost of the meal and the amount of time you have to prepare the meal.

Submit a Recipe-  When you click on this tab you will be able to share your favorite recipes with the class.  This may help you find good “kid tested” recipes.

Community Events-  This tab allows you to see what is going on in the community. We hope this will be a forum for you to announce what is going on in your community, and will allow kids and parents to schedule activities like flag football at the park on Saturday, or bike riding in the bosque on Sunday.

There are a lot of valuable web-based resources. Some of those we really like are included as links on the RIGHT. These links are available to help you in completing the five homework assignments as well as to give you ideas to tackle some of the obstacles to eating healthy, exercising regularly and keeping track of what you and your student’s bodies need.

Here is a breakdown of what to expect in the column to the Right:

Other Resources-  These are other websites with additional information concerning health, exercise and nutrition.  They provide valuable and accurate resources for better understanding many of the topics discussed in the homework.

Understanding Nutrition-  Under this header you will find several articles that will help you better understand the fundamentals of nutrition.  Articles will explore topics such as how to read the nutrition facts label on food goods, the difference between "good fats" and "bad fats," the difference between whole grains and refined grains, and the definition of carbohydrates and protein.

Meal Planning and Diet- The links in this category will help you to plan healthy well balanced meals as well as learn what to look for when you are preparing and buying foods.  The links will also help you to address issues like picky eaters and what foods to order when you buy take-out.  The articles in this category give you numerous tips for improving your diet.

Shopping Guide-  These articles will help you to get the most out of your grocery shopping and give you tips for buying and finding healthier foods.

Exercise Guide-  The exercise guide section will connect you to resources that will help you to know  the recommended guidelines for exercise as well as ways to get your children more physically active.  It also explains why America is facing so many weight related challenges.  Some of those factors include media time such as television watching, video gaming, and computer internet surfing.
